This letter from a retired US Air Force Colonel strongly supports Michael’s disability claim (38 USC 1151) filed with the VA. He describes witnessing Michael’s debilitating decline following surgery in 2021, highlighting the stark contrast between Michael’s pre- and post-operative states and expressing deep concern over the VA’s inadequate response. The letter emphasizes the family’s disappointment with the VA’s handling of the case and their cautious optimism for an upcoming surgery in 2024, framing it as crucial for Michael’s recovery. Ultimately, the letter serves as a powerful plea for the VA to consider Michael’s case with compassion and urgency, emphasizing his suffering and the inadequacy of the initial response.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you today not just in my capacity as a retired Colonel of the US Air Force but as a concerned brother-in-law and a witness to the profound challenges faced by my brother-in-law, Michael, following his surgery in August 2021. This letter supports Michael’s 38 USC 1151 disability claim, a path I never imagined we would have to navigate.
Throughout my career in the service, I have faced and overcome numerous challenges, but none have been as personally harrowing as watching Michael’s struggle. The day of his surgery, we were all optimistic, hopeful for a change that would bring back the Michael we knew — full of life and enthusiasm.
However, the outcome was far from what we expected. In the weeks and months that followed, I saw a man, once the epitome of vigor, succumb to relentless pain and debilitation. It was a painful transition, seeing him go from independent mobility to the need for a walker. Michael’s spirit, which had always been unbreakable, was visibly affected.
As a family, we were deeply concerned by the response, or rather the lack of it, from the VA regarding his post-operative complications. It was disheartening to witness the system we trusted not stepping up when it mattered the most. It was only when Baylor Medical Center intervened that we saw a ray of hope, an opportunity for Michael to reclaim some semblance of his former life.
Now, as we approach another surgery in the year 2024, I am cautiously hopeful. This surgery represents more than a medical procedure; it is a chance for Michael to regain a part of himself that we’ve all missed dearly.
I am reaching out to you with a sincere request to consider Michael’s situation with the seriousness and empathy it warrants. He is more than just a case file; he is a man whose life has been drastically altered by circumstances beyond his control.
Thank you for taking the time to understand our situation. If there’s any further information you need, or if you wish to discuss this in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I certify that the statements on this form are true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief.
Sincerely and with hope,
Retired Colonel, US Air Force
